Morning Glory (Ipomoea species) seeds have a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, primarily in Central and South America. In some folk medicine practices, Morning Glory seeds were reportedly used for their psychoactive and sedative properties, which may be connected to their content of lysergic acid amides (ergoline alkaloids, chemically similar to LSD). Historical ethnobotanical accounts suggest their use in rituals and for various ailments, including as a sleep aid. However, these uses were often spiritual or shamanic rather than strictly medicinal, and the sedative effects were likely secondary to the psychoactive experience.
Despite this traditional background, there is minimal scientific validation for using Morning Glory seeds specifically to treat insomnia. Modern clinical studies examining their safety and efficacy for sleep disorders are lacking. The psychoactive properties of the seeds can induce hallucinations and other unpredictable central nervous system effects, making their use for insomnia both unreliable and potentially dangerous. Ingesting Morning Glory seeds can also cause adverse effects such as nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. For these reasons, their use as a sleep aid is not endorsed by modern medicine, and the evidence for their efficacy remains anecdotal at best.
