Evidence supporting the use of: Embelia
For the health condition: Insomnia
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Embelia, particularly Embelia ribes, has a longstanding history in traditional Ayurvedic and Unani medicine systems. Its primary traditional uses have revolved around treating intestinal worms (as an anthelmintic), digestive issues, and fever. While not as prominently cited as some other herbs for sleep, there are records in traditional Ayurvedic literature where Embelia ribes is mentioned as part of multi-herb formulations aimed at calming the mind or supporting sleep. These uses are typically not as direct or as well-documented as those for its anthelmintic properties, and references to its use in insomnia are relatively sparse and not central to its ethnobotanical profile.
From a scientific standpoint, studies on Embelia for insomnia or sleep disorders are virtually nonexistent. Some animal studies have explored its neuropharmacological effects, such as anxiolytic or CNS depressant activity, but these are preliminary and rarely linked directly to sleep promotion. No clinical trials or robust preclinical studies have been published that specifically assess Embelia for insomnia. Therefore, while there is minimal traditional precedent for its use in supporting sleep, this is not strongly substantiated by historical texts or scientific data.
