Evidence supporting the use of: Damask rose
For the health condition: Insomnia
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Damask rose (Rosa damascena) has a long history of use in traditional medicine for its calming and relaxing properties, including as a remedy for insomnia and anxiety. In Persian traditional medicine, rose preparations such as rose water, rose oil, and rose tea are commonly used for their sedative effects. The soothing aroma of Damask rose has been believed to help ease nervous tension and promote restful sleep. Aromatherapy practices in various cultures also use rose essential oil to create a calming environment conducive to sleep.
While there are a few small-scale scientific studies suggesting that inhalation of Damask rose essential oil may reduce anxiety or improve subjective sleep quality, the evidence is limited and often methodologically weak. Most clinical trials focus on anxiety, pain relief, or mood enhancement rather than insomnia itself, and sample sizes are generally small. Therefore, while tradition strongly supports Damask rose for insomnia, scientific validation remains preliminary and insufficient for a high evidence rating. Its use for sleep support continues to be primarily rooted in historical and cultural practices.
