Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Angelica (referring primarily to Angelica archangelica or related species) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, especially in Europe and Asia. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), certain species of Angelica, such as Angelica sinensis (Dong Quai), have been used as part of herbal formulas for a variety of conditions, including as a general tonic and to support women's health, but occasionally also as a mild calming agent. In European folk medicine, Angelica root was sometimes included in preparations intended to soothe nerves or promote relaxation, which may indirectly support sleep. However, there is very limited direct historical evidence that Angelica was specifically used to treat insomnia as a primary indication; more often, it was seen as a digestive aid or general tonic. From a scientific perspective, there is a lack of robust clinical studies evaluating Angelica's efficacy for insomnia or sleep disorders. Some laboratory studies have identified compounds in Angelica species with mild sedative or anxiolytic actions in animal models, but these findings have not translated into strong clinical evidence in humans. Overall, the use of Angelica for insomnia is primarily supported by traditional use, with weak evidence and no well-established mechanism or efficacy proven in modern research.
