Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4

Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) is scientifically validated for use in the treatment and support of certain injuries, particularly those involving tissue repair and regeneration. PDGF is a naturally occurring protein found in platelets that plays a crucial role in the body's healing process by stimulating cell proliferation, migration, and angiogenesis (formation of new blood vessels). Its application has been explored extensively in the context of wound healing, bone regeneration, and periodontal repair.

One of the most well-established uses of PDGF is in the treatment of chronic diabetic foot ulcers. Recombinant human PDGF-BB (becaplermin gel) is FDA-approved for this indication and has been shown in multiple randomized controlled trials to improve the rate and likelihood of wound closure compared to placebo. PDGF is also used in orthopedic and dental procedures to enhance bone and soft tissue regeneration, including in guided bone regeneration and periodontal surgeries. Clinical studies have demonstrated that PDGF-containing formulations can accelerate healing, improve tissue quality, and reduce healing time in these contexts.

However, while the evidence is robust for some specific applications, the use of PDGF for general injury treatment is still under investigation, and its efficacy may vary depending on the type and severity of the injury. Overall, the scientific community recognizes PDGF as an effective adjunct in specific tissue healing scenarios.
