Leptospermum scoparium, commonly known as manuka, has a long history of traditional use among Māori and early European settlers in New Zealand for treating wounds and injuries. Traditional applications included the use of crushed leaves and bark as poultices for cuts, abrasions, and skin infections. The antiseptic qualities attributed to manuka were recognized well before modern scientific validation. While more recent studies have focused primarily on manuka honey (derived from the nectar of L. scoparium) and its antimicrobial activity, there is limited direct scientific investigation into the topical use of the plant itself for injuries. Most evidence supporting its use in wound care therefore remains anecdotal and based on historical accounts. Modern research on manuka honey suggests antibacterial and wound-healing properties, but extrapolation to the whole plant or non-honey extracts is not fully justified by current data. In summary, the use of Leptospermum scoparium for injuries is primarily supported by traditional knowledge with some indirect scientific parallels from studies on manuka honey, but direct clinical evidence for the plant itself in injury management is limited.
