Chinese Pine (Pinus tabuliformis and related species) has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where various parts of the tree—especially the needles, bark, and resin—are employed for their purported medicinal properties. In TCM, pine is sometimes used topically or internally to "invigorate blood circulation," "dispel wind-dampness," and promote healing of injuries such as bruises, sprains, and wounds. Pine resin, in particular, is found in classical herbal formulas for external application to support the healing of soft tissue injuries and reduce swelling and pain.
However, the scientific evidence supporting these traditional uses is limited. Laboratory studies on pine extracts have demonstrated anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which theoretically could be beneficial for injury recovery. Yet, there is a lack of robust clinical trials or systematic reviews specifically examining the effectiveness of Chinese Pine preparations for treating physical injuries in humans.
In summary, the use of Chinese Pine for injury support is primarily justified by historical and traditional practices within TCM, with some plausible biological mechanisms suggested by preliminary laboratory research.
