Castor oil, derived from the seeds of the Ricinus communis plant, has a long history of traditional use for various ailments, including the support and treatment of injuries. In folk medicine, particularly in Ayurveda and other traditional systems, castor oil is often applied topically as a compress or massage oil to reduce inflammation, promote healing, and relieve pain associated with sprains, bruises, and minor wounds. The rationale is largely based on castor oil's purported anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, which are attributed to its high ricinoleic acid content.
However, scientific validation for these uses remains limited. While some laboratory and animal studies suggest that ricinoleic acid possesses anti-inflammatory effects, robust clinical evidence demonstrating castor oil’s efficacy in treating or supporting injury healing in humans is lacking. Most modern medical guidelines do not recognize castor oil as a standard treatment for injuries.
