Arnica (Arnica montana) has a long history of traditional use for treating injuries, especially bruises, sprains, muscle soreness, and inflammation. Its use can be traced back hundreds of years in European herbal medicine, where preparations made from the arnica flower were applied topically to reduce pain and swelling after trauma. The plant contains compounds such as sesquiterpene lactones (notably helenalin), flavonoids, and essential oils, which are believed to contribute to its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties.
Scientific validation of arnica’s efficacy for injury treatment is limited and mixed. Some small clinical trials suggest that topical arnica gels or creams may help reduce pain and bruising after minor injuries or surgical procedures. However, systematic reviews and meta-analyses generally conclude that the evidence is inconsistent or of low quality, often due to small sample sizes, methodological flaws, or lack of robust controls. Homeopathic preparations of arnica (which are highly diluted) have not been consistently shown to be more effective than placebo.
Overall, the use of arnica for injuries is primarily justified by tradition, with some weak scientific support for topical use. Oral arnica is not recommended due to potential toxicity.
