Achyranthes bidentata, known as "Niu Xi" in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has a long history of use for supporting recovery from injuries, particularly those involving bones, ligaments, and joints. The herb is traditionally believed to "invigorate blood circulation," "dispel blood stasis," and "strengthen sinews and bones," making it a common ingredient in TCM formulas for trauma, bruises, and musculoskeletal injuries. Historical texts such as the "Shennong Bencao Jing" and later materia medica consistently list it for these indications. Modern pharmacological studies have provided some preliminary support for these uses, demonstrating anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and bone metabolism-modulating effects in animal models. However, robust clinical trials in humans are limited. Most evidence remains preclinical or based on traditional use patterns. As a result, while there is a strong traditional basis and some emerging scientific interest, the current evidence base is not strong enough to fully validate its efficacy for injury treatment by modern standards, but it is well-established in traditional practice.
