Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Tremella, commonly known as "snow fungus" or "silver ear," has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for supporting lung health, nourishing yin, and moistening dryness. Within the context of TCM, it is sometimes used to help relieve symptoms associated with respiratory infections, including influenza-like illnesses, by purportedly enhancing immunity and soothing coughs. However, evidence supporting its use specifically for influenza is primarily traditional rather than scientific.

Some modern in vitro and animal studies suggest that polysaccharides isolated from Tremella species may have immunomodulatory and antioxidant effects, which could theoretically support the body’s defense against viral infections. However, these studies are preliminary and do not provide direct evidence for effectiveness against influenza virus in humans. There are no high-quality clinical trials or robust scientific data confirming Tremella’s efficacy in preventing or treating influenza. Therefore, while its use for respiratory symptoms is common in traditional medicine, scientific support remains limited and inconclusive at this time.
