Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 1

Transfer Factor is a term for a group of low-molecular-weight immune signaling molecules, often derived from colostrum or leukocytes, that are marketed as immune modulators. There is historical interest in their potential to modulate immune responses against various infections, including viral diseases like influenza. However, scientific validation for the use of Transfer Factor specifically in the prevention or treatment of influenza in humans is very limited. The majority of the research consists of small, often uncontrolled studies or animal experiments. Some studies from the 1970s and 1980s explored the use of Transfer Factor in viral infections, but these were generally of low methodological quality and not specific to influenza. Contemporary, high-quality randomized controlled trials evaluating efficacy for influenza are lacking. While Transfer Factor may have theoretical immunomodulatory effects, current evidence does not robustly support its use for influenza. Most clinical guidelines and expert reviews do not recommend Transfer Factor for this purpose, and regulatory agencies do not recognize it as a treatment for influenza. In summary, while there is some scientific exploration into Transfer Factor and immune function, the direct evidence for its benefit in influenza is minimal, resulting in a low evidence rating.
