Evidence supporting the use of: Microtea debilis
For the health condition: Influenza
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Microtea debilis is primarily used in traditional medicine systems, particularly in the Caribbean, Central, and South America. There are ethnobotanical records indicating that infusions or decoctions of the plant have been used locally to treat symptoms of the flu (influenza), such as fever and body aches. However, available evidence for its efficacy is limited to these traditional practices, and there is a lack of robust scientific validation through preclinical or clinical studies. No peer-reviewed pharmacological studies have directly assessed its effects against influenza virus or its primary symptoms. The traditional use may be based on the plant’s general anti-inflammatory or febrifuge properties as perceived by local practitioners, but these effects remain largely anecdotal. Therefore, while there is a historical precedent for its use in influenza-like illnesses, the evidence supporting its efficacy is weak and should be considered preliminary until more rigorous scientific research is conducted.
