Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Houttuynia cordata, commonly known as fish mint or "yu xing cao" in Chinese, has been traditionally used in East Asian medicine, especially in China, as a remedy for respiratory tract infections, including influenza. Its use for influenza is rooted in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) practices, where it is believed to "clear heat" and "remove toxins." Historical texts and materia medica from TCM describe Houttuynia as beneficial for treating symptoms such as fever, cough, and sore throat associated with influenza-like illnesses.

While there are some in vitro and animal studies suggesting that Houttuynia extracts may have antiviral and immunomodulatory properties, including effects against influenza viruses, these studies are generally preliminary and not definitive. There is a lack of robust, high-quality clinical trial evidence in humans demonstrating clear efficacy for the treatment or prevention of influenza. Most of the scientific studies are limited to laboratory or animal models, and systematic reviews have noted the insufficient clinical evidence to recommend it as a standard therapy. Thus, its use is primarily justified by tradition, with only limited scientific validation.

In summary, Houttuynia cordata is traditionally used in East Asia to support the treatment of influenza, but current scientific evidence is weak and not sufficient to fully substantiate its efficacy.
