Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Camu Camu (Myrciaria dubia) is a fruit native to the Amazon rainforest, and its extract is rich in vitamin C and various phytochemicals. Traditionally, indigenous peoples in Peru and Brazil have used Camu Camu for its perceived health benefits, including to help manage common colds and flu-like symptoms. This traditional use is mostly attributed to its very high vitamin C content, which is known to support immune function. However, there is a scarcity of direct scientific studies evaluating Camu Camu extract specifically for the prevention or treatment of influenza in humans. The available evidence is limited to its nutritional content and in vitro antioxidant properties, rather than clinical trials or robust observational studies demonstrating efficacy against influenza viruses. In summary, while there is a traditional rationale for using Camu Camu extract to support immune health during influenza, scientific validation for this specific use is lacking, and the evidence supporting it is weak and indirect.
