Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Balsam, particularly balsam of Peru and balsam of Tolu, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems for treating respiratory ailments, including influenza. These balsams are aromatic resins obtained from certain trees and have been used in cough syrups, lozenges, and topical preparations. Their use is primarily based on their expectorant and soothing properties, as well as a comforting aroma believed to ease breathing and cough. However, scientific research specifically supporting the use of balsam for influenza is lacking. While some in vitro studies have suggested mild antimicrobial or anti-inflammatory activity for balsam constituents, there is no robust clinical evidence demonstrating efficacy against the influenza virus or significant symptomatic relief in humans. Modern pharmacology does not recognize balsam as an effective treatment for influenza, and its use persists mainly through traditional herbal and folk medicine practices. Therefore, while balsam may provide subjective relief of respiratory symptoms due to its aromatic and soothing properties, it should not be considered a validated or evidence-based treatment for influenza.
