Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Aster tataricus, commonly known as "Zi Wan" in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has a long history of use for respiratory ailments, including coughs and conditions associated with influenza. In TCM, it is believed to "moisten the lungs" and "relieve cough," making it a frequent component in herbal formulas for symptoms resembling those of influenza, such as cough, sore throat, and expectoration of phlegm. Historical texts and pharmacopeias document its use for these purposes for centuries.

However, direct scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of Aster tataricus specifically for treating or preventing influenza is limited. While some in vitro studies have demonstrated that extracts of Aster tataricus possess anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and even mild antiviral properties, these studies are generally preliminary and not specific to the influenza virus or conducted in humans. The majority of clinical evidence is anecdotal or based on its use as part of multi-herb formulations, making it difficult to attribute effects to Aster tataricus alone. Thus, while its use is well-rooted in tradition for influenza-like symptoms, robust scientific validation for its efficacy against influenza itself is currently lacking.
