Myrrh, a resin obtained from the Commiphora species, has a long history in traditional medicine, particularly in the Middle East and Asia, for treating digestive ailments. In recent years, myrrh has attracted scientific interest for its potential anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, which may be relevant to Inflammatory Bowel Disorders (IBD) such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.
Some preclinical studies have shown that myrrh extracts can reduce markers of inflammation in animal models of colitis. For example, myrrh components like furanodiene and sesquiterpenes have demonstrated inhibition of pro-inflammatory cytokines (e.g., TNF-α, IL-1β) and a reduction in oxidative stress in the gut. Additionally, a few small clinical trials have evaluated herbal combinations containing myrrh (often with chamomile and coffee charcoal) as adjunctive therapy for ulcerative colitis. These studies suggest a potential benefit in maintaining remission, but the results are preliminary and the effect size is modest.
Nonetheless, robust clinical evidence for the efficacy of myrrh alone in IBD is lacking, and most studies use myrrh as part of a multi-herb preparation. Safety data are generally favorable, but more high-quality, placebo-controlled trials are needed to confirm efficacy and clarify optimal dosing. Thus, while there is some scientific basis for exploring myrrh in IBD, current evidence supports only a cautious, adjunctive role rather than primary therapy.
