Lactobacillus pentosus is a probiotic bacterium commonly found in fermented foods, such as olives and pickles, and has been studied for its potential health benefits, including in the management of Inflammatory Bowel Disorders (IBD) such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. The use of L. pentosus in IBD is supported by a limited but growing body of scientific research. Animal studies have indicated that certain strains of L. pentosus can reduce inflammation markers and improve gut barrier function in models of colitis. For example, studies in mice have shown that L. pentosus S-PT84 administration can suppress inflammatory cytokine production and ameliorate symptoms associated with colitis.
Human evidence, however, remains sparse. A few small clinical trials and case studies have explored the use of L. pentosus-containing probiotics in patients with IBD, but these studies often use mixed-strain products, making it difficult to attribute effects specifically to L. pentosus. Some in vitro research suggests the species can modulate immune responses and reduce pro-inflammatory signals, which are relevant to the pathophysiology of IBD. Nonetheless, the overall quality and quantity of evidence is low, and L. pentosus is not a mainstay in clinical practice for IBD at this time. Further rigorous, strain-specific human trials are needed to confirm its efficacy and safety.
