Lactobacillus paracasei is a probiotic bacterium that has been studied for its potential benefits in managing Inflammatory Bowel Disorders (IBD), including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Scientific evidence for its use is emerging but is not yet definitive. Several preclinical studies in animal models have demonstrated that L. paracasei can modulate gut immune responses, reduce intestinal inflammation, and improve mucosal barrier function. Some human clinical trials and pilot studies suggest that supplementation with L. paracasei, alone or in combination with other probiotics, may help reduce disease activity, improve symptoms, and promote remission in IBD patients. The proposed mechanisms include modulation of the gut microbiota, production of anti-inflammatory cytokines, and enhancement of regulatory T cell responses.
However, most clinical trials to date are small, heterogeneous, and sometimes use multi-strain formulations, making it difficult to attribute effects solely to L. paracasei.
