Lactobacillus kefiranofaciens is a probiotic bacterium commonly found in kefir grains, and there is emerging scientific interest in its potential to support or treat Inflammatory Bowel Disorders (IBD), such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. The evidence is primarily preclinical, with a handful of animal studies and very limited human data.
Animal studies have shown that administration of L. kefiranofaciens or its exopolysaccharide product (kefiran) can reduce colitis symptoms in rodent models. For example, mice treated with kefiranofaciens showed reduced colonic inflammation, improved mucosal integrity, and modulation of immune responses, such as downregulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines (e.g., TNF-α, IL-6). These effects are thought to be related to enhancement of the gut barrier and normalization of gut microbiota composition.
Human evidence is extremely limited. No robust clinical trials evaluating L. kefiranofaciens specifically in IBD patients have been published as of June 2024. Some small pilot studies with multi-strain kefir or probiotics containing this species suggest possible improvements in gut symptoms, but these studies are not specific enough to attribute benefits solely to L. kefiranofaciens.
In summary, while L. kefiranofaciens has shown promise in preclinical models of IBD, direct scientific validation in humans is lacking. The current evidence level is low (rated 2/5), and further clinical research is needed before it can be recommended as a treatment or adjunct for IBD.
