Lactobacillus crispatus is a probiotic bacterium primarily known for its role in maintaining vaginal health, but there is emerging scientific interest regarding its impact on gut health and inflammatory bowel disorders (IBD), such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. However, the body of evidence specifically examining L. crispatus in IBD is limited compared to more extensively studied strains like Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG or Bifidobacterium species.

Some preclinical studies in animal models have indicated that L. crispatus can modulate the intestinal immune response, reduce pro-inflammatory cytokines, and strengthen the gut barrier. For instance, experimental work has shown that administration of L. crispatus can decrease markers of inflammation in chemically induced colitis in mice. There are also in vitro studies suggesting its ability to inhibit pathogenic bacteria and modulate the local immune environment.

Despite these promising results, clinical evidence in humans is sparse. There are few, if any, robust randomized controlled trials directly evaluating L. crispatus supplementation in patients with IBD. Most clinical probiotic interventions for IBD have focused on other species. Therefore, while the use of L. crispatus for IBD is justified by a plausible scientific rationale and preliminary data, the current level of evidence is low, warranting a rating of 2 out of 5.

In summary, L. crispatus shows potential in preclinical models for supporting IBD, but more high-quality human studies are needed before its use can be strongly recommended.
