Flavones are a subclass of flavonoids, naturally occurring polyphenolic compounds found in a variety of fruits, vegetables, and medicinal plants. In recent years, there has been growing scientific interest in the potential therapeutic effects of flavones for Inflammatory Bowel Disorders (IBD) such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Preclinical studies, primarily in animal models and in vitro systems, have demonstrated that certain flavones (e.g., apigenin, luteolin, baicalin) exhibit anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory properties. These mechanisms may help reduce intestinal inflammation, modulate cytokine production, and protect the intestinal barrier, all of which are relevant in IBD pathophysiology. Some studies have shown that flavones can inhibit key inflammatory pathways, such as NF-κB and MAPK signaling, and suppress the production of pro-inflammatory mediators like TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-1β.
Despite these promising findings, direct clinical evidence in humans remains limited. A few small pilot studies and clinical trials have investigated the effects of flavone-rich extracts or isolated flavones in IBD patients, with some reporting improvements in inflammatory markers and symptoms. However, the available human data are not yet robust or consistent enough to draw definitive conclusions, and more large-scale, well-controlled clinical trials are needed. Thus, while there is a reasonable scientific rationale and moderate preclinical evidence for the use of flavones in IBD, the clinical evidence is still emerging.
