Chinese Tinospora, also known as Tinospora sinensis or by its Chinese name "Qing Jiao Teng," has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Traditionally, it has been prescribed for a variety of inflammatory conditions, including those affecting the gastrointestinal tract. In the context of Inflammatory Bowel Disorders (IBD) such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease, its use is primarily justified by its historical application for clearing heat and dampness, which are believed in TCM theory to underlie many gastrointestinal complaints.
However, scientific evidence validating its efficacy specifically for IBD is limited. Most available studies focus on Tinospora cordifolia (an Indian species) rather than Tinospora sinensis. A few in vitro and animal studies suggest potential anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects, but these are preliminary and not specific to human IBD.
