Bifidobacteria are a group of probiotic bacteria commonly found in the human gut. Their use for Inflammatory Bowel Disorders (IBD), such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, is primarily supported by scientific research rather than tradition. Several studies, including randomized controlled trials, have investigated the efficacy of Bifidobacteria (often in combination with other probiotics) in reducing inflammation and symptoms associated with IBD. Proposed mechanisms include modulation of the immune response, enhancement of the intestinal barrier, inhibition of pathogenic bacteria, and production of short-chain fatty acids that nourish gut epithelial cells.

Evidence is mixed but promising: meta-analyses and systematic reviews suggest that certain strains of Bifidobacteria (e.g., Bifidobacterium breve, Bifidobacterium longum) may help induce or maintain remission in ulcerative colitis, and possibly reduce symptoms in some cases of Crohn’s disease. However, most clinical studies use multi-strain probiotic preparations, making it difficult to attribute benefits to Bifidobacteria alone or to unspecified strains.
