Basidiomycota, a phylum of fungi that includes medicinal mushrooms such as Ganoderma lucidum (Reishi), Coriolus versicolor (Turkey tail), and Lentinula edodes (Shiitake), has been studied for its potential role in supporting or treating Inflammatory Bowel Disorders (IBD), including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Scientific interest is based primarily on the immune-modulating, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties of polysaccharides, particularly beta-glucans, found in these fungi.

Preclinical studies in cell culture and animal models have demonstrated that extracts from certain Basidiomycota species can reduce inflammation, decrease oxidative stress, and modulate gut microbiota. For example, Ganoderma lucidum polysaccharides have shown to alleviate colitis symptoms in mice by reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines and restoring barrier function. Similarly, Coriolus versicolor extracts have exhibited immunomodulatory effects relevant to IBD pathology.

However, human clinical evidence remains limited and generally of low quality. A few small pilot trials and case reports suggest some improvement in symptoms or biomarkers, but large-scale, well-controlled clinical studies are lacking. Most available data come from preclinical research, making current scientific validation suggestive but preliminary. Therefore, while use of Basidiomycota in IBD management is partially supported by scientific findings, the evidence is not strong enough for firm clinical recommendations at this time.
