Bacillus clausii is a probiotic bacterium that has been investigated for use in gastrointestinal disorders, including Inflammatory Bowel Disorders (IBD) such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. The rationale for its use is primarily scientific, based on its ability to modulate gut flora, enhance mucosal barrier function, and exert immunomodulatory effects. Several small clinical trials and animal studies suggest that B. clausii may help reduce inflammation and restore gut microbiota balance, which are disrupted in IBD patients. For example, B. clausii has demonstrated the ability to increase anti-inflammatory cytokines and decrease pro-inflammatory cytokines in some models.

However, the overall quality and quantity of evidence specifically for IBD are limited. Most clinical studies involving B. clausii have focused on antibiotic-associated diarrhea or general gastrointestinal health, rather than IBD specifically. While some studies report improved symptoms or reduced relapse rates in IBD patients taking B. clausii as an adjunct to standard therapy, these are generally small, not always well-controlled, and often published in lower-impact journals. As a result, major gastroenterological guidelines do not currently recommend B. clausii as a primary or standalone treatment for IBD. More robust randomized controlled trials are needed to establish its efficacy and safety in this context. In summary, the use of B. clausii in IBD is supported by preliminary scientific findings, but the evidence is still weak and not definitive.
