Evidence for 7,14-Hydroxy-Docosapentaenoic Acid in Inflammatory Bowel Disorders
7,14-Hydroxy-Docosapentaenoic Acid (7,14-HDPA) is a specialized pro-resolving mediator (SPM) derived from omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids. SPMs, including resolvins, protectins, and maresins, have been investigated for their roles in resolving inflammation, particularly in chronic inflammatory diseases such as Inflammatory Bowel Disorders (IBD), which include Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.
There is some preclinical scientific evidence suggesting that 7,14-HDPA may exert beneficial effects in models of intestinal inflammation. Animal studies and in vitro experiments have demonstrated that SPMs can reduce inflammatory cell infiltration, decrease pro-inflammatory cytokine production, and promote tissue healing in the gut. For instance, studies have shown that certain SPMs can ameliorate colitis in mouse models by modulating immune cell responses and enhancing resolution pathways.
However, the specific evidence for 7,14-HDPA itself (as opposed to the broader class of SPMs) remains limited to a handful of recent laboratory studies, with little to no clinical trial data in humans as of 2024. There is currently insufficient high-quality human evidence to definitively support its therapeutic use in IBD, and no official clinical guidelines recommend its use. Thus, while the mechanism is scientifically plausible and early data is promising, the overall strength of evidence is rated as 2/5, reflecting a need for more robust clinical research.
