Vitamin D has garnered significant scientific attention for its potential role in supporting the immune system, particularly in the context of viral infections. Several observational studies have shown an association between low serum vitamin D levels and increased susceptibility to respiratory tract infections, including influenza and other viral illnesses. Vitamin D is thought to modulate both innate and adaptive immune responses, enhancing the pathogen-fighting effects of monocytes and macrophages and reducing inflammation. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have provided mixed but generally supportive evidence. A 2017 meta-analysis in the BMJ examining over 10,000 participants found that vitamin D supplementation reduced the risk of acute respiratory tract infection, especially in those with significant baseline deficiency. During the COVID-19 pandemic, further research suggested that vitamin D deficiency may be associated with higher risk of infection and worse outcomes, though RCTs specifically addressing supplementation as a preventive or therapeutic measure for viral infections such as COVID-19 have produced variable results. While vitamin D is not a cure for viral infections, maintaining adequate levels is widely considered advisable for optimal immune function. Supplementation is particularly recommended for individuals with known deficiency or limited sun exposure. Overall, the evidence supports a beneficial, though not definitive, role for vitamin D in reducing the risk or severity of some viral infections.
