Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Oroxylum indicum, commonly known as the "Indian trumpet tree," is a medicinal plant widely used in traditional Ayurvedic and folk medicine systems across South and Southeast Asia. Its bark, leaves, and fruits are ingredients in numerous classical Ayurvedic formulations, such as Dashamoola and Chyawanprash, both of which are used to support immune function and treat various infectious diseases, including those of viral origin. The traditional use is primarily based on its broad classification as a "Rasayana" (rejuvenative) and its bitter, astringent, and anti-inflammatory properties, which are believed to help the body resist infection and recover from illness. Scientific studies investigating the direct antiviral activity of Oroxylum indicum are limited. Some in vitro research has suggested that extracts from the plant possess moderate inhibitory effects against certain viruses, likely due to the presence of flavonoids such as baicalein and chrysin, which have demonstrated antiviral properties in laboratory studies. However, robust clinical evidence in humans is lacking, and most of the antiviral claims remain anecdotal or based on animal models. In summary, the use of Oroxylum indicum to support or treat viral infections is primarily justified by traditional medicine, with only preliminary scientific studies lending limited support to its antiviral potential. More rigorous clinical trials are needed to validate its efficacy and safety for viral infections.
