Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Lactobacillus paracasei is a probiotic bacterium that has been studied for its potential to support immune health and offer some protection against viral infections. Scientific evidence, while still emerging, suggests that certain strains of L. paracasei can modulate the immune system, enhance mucosal barrier function, and stimulate the production of antiviral cytokines. Several clinical and preclinical studies have found that supplementation with L. paracasei may reduce the incidence or duration of common viral infections, such as the common cold or influenza-like illnesses, particularly in children and elderly populations. For example, a 2014 randomized controlled trial found that a combination of L. paracasei and other probiotics reduced the duration of upper respiratory tract infections in preschool children. Animal studies also indicate that L. paracasei can enhance antiviral immune responses, such as increasing natural killer (NK) cell activity.

However, while these findings are promising, the evidence base is not yet robust. Studies often use mixed probiotic formulations, making it difficult to isolate the effect of L. paracasei alone. Additionally, not all studies have shown a significant benefit, and more large-scale, well-designed human trials are needed to confirm efficacy and determine optimal strains and dosages. Overall, there is scientific rationale and some preliminary clinical support for L. paracasei in supporting the immune system against viral infections, but the current evidence is moderate and does not justify strong clinical recommendations for viral infection treatment.
