Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Beta-glucans are polysaccharides found in the cell walls of cereals, bacteria, and fungi, and they have been investigated for their immune-modulating properties. Scientific studies, primarily in vitro and in animal models, indicate that beta-glucans can stimulate various components of the immune system, such as macrophages, neutrophils, and natural killer (NK) cells. This immunomodulation is theorized to enhance the body's ability to respond to viral infections. Human clinical studies are limited but suggest some immune-enhancing potential, with a few small trials indicating reduced incidence or severity of upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs) in individuals taking beta-glucan supplements. However, data specific to the treatment or prevention of viral infections in humans are inconsistent and often lack robust methodology or sufficient sample size.

Systematic reviews and meta-analyses generally conclude that while beta-glucans appear safe and may modestly reduce the risk of some infections, the evidence is insufficient to recommend them as a primary or adjunct therapy for viral infections. More rigorous, large-scale human clinical trials are needed to clarify their efficacy. Overall, there is some scientific basis for their use, but the quality and quantity of evidence supporting beta-glucans for viral infection are moderate at best.
