Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Beta glucans are naturally occurring polysaccharides found in the cell walls of cereals, yeast, bacteria, and fungi. Their use to help support immune function and potentially improve resistance to viral infections is primarily based on scientific investigation rather than traditional medicine. Several preclinical studies and a limited number of clinical trials suggest that beta glucans can stimulate innate immune responses, including the activation of macrophages, neutrophils, and natural killer (NK) cells, which play a role in defending against viral pathogens. Some human studies, particularly those using beta glucans derived from yeast (such as Saccharomyces cerevisiae), have reported reduced incidence or severity of upper respiratory tract infections, which are often viral in origin.

However, the quality and quantity of clinical evidence are still limited. Most studies have small sample sizes, short durations, and varied beta glucan sources and dosages, leading to heterogeneity and making it difficult to draw definitive conclusions. There is some evidence suggesting that beta glucans may reduce the occurrence or duration of common colds, but robust data on their efficacy against specific viral infections (such as influenza or COVID-19) are lacking. In summary, while there is scientific interest and some supportive evidence for beta glucans as immune modulators with potential antiviral benefits, the clinical evidence is modest and does not yet support strong recommendations for their use as a primary treatment or preventive strategy for viral infections.
