Baicalin is a flavonoid compound extracted from the roots of Scutellaria baicalensis (Chinese skullcap), a traditional Chinese medicinal herb. Historically, this plant has been used to treat fever and infections. In recent years, scientific research has investigated baicalin’s antiviral properties. In vitro and animal studies suggest baicalin exhibits activity against a range of viruses, including influenza, hepatitis B, dengue, HIV, and certain coronaviruses. The proposed mechanisms include inhibition of viral replication, modulation of immune responses, and reduction of inflammation via pathways such as NF-κB and MAPK.

For example, several studies demonstrate that baicalin can inhibit influenza A virus replication in cell cultures and reduce lung injury in infected mice. Other research indicates potential suppression of hepatitis B virus replication and reduction of viral antigens. However, most clinical evidence in humans is preliminary or lacking. While the preclinical data are promising, there are few robust, controlled human trials confirming baicalin’s efficacy against viral infections. Therefore, the scientific evidence is moderate (rated 3/5), with most support coming from laboratory and animal models rather than large-scale human studies.
