Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) has a long history of traditional use for various health concerns, including infections. Folk medicine has often recommended ACV for sore throats, colds, and other viral infections, citing its perceived antimicrobial properties. The primary rationale is that the acetic acid in vinegar creates an acidic environment, which can inhibit the growth of some microorganisms in vitro. However, most of this evidence is anecdotal or based on in vitro studies, not clinical trials in humans.

To date, there is no robust scientific evidence demonstrating that ACV can prevent, treat, or cure viral infections in humans. The existing research is limited to laboratory studies that examine the effects of vinegar or acetic acid on bacteria and, to a lesser extent, on viruses outside the human body. No high-quality clinical trials have supported its efficacy against viral infections when consumed or used as a gargle by people. Therefore, while its use is grounded in tradition, scientific validation is lacking. Anyone considering ACV for infection should use it with caution and not as a substitute for proven medical therapies.
