Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Anamu (Petiveria alliacea) has a long history of use in traditional medicine across Central and South America and the Caribbean, particularly for its purported ability to combat various infections, including those of viral origin. Indigenous and folk healers have traditionally prepared Anamu as teas, tinctures, or poultices to treat colds, flu, and other viral illnesses. The rationale for its use stems from observed effects in traditional settings rather than rigorous scientific validation.

Some preliminary laboratory studies have investigated Anamu’s bioactive compounds, such as dibenzyl trisulfide and flavonoids, for potential antiviral activity. In vitro research has shown some inhibitory effects against certain viruses, including herpes simplex and influenza, but these findings are limited to cell-based models and have not progressed to robust clinical trials in humans. There is currently insufficient scientific evidence to conclusively support the use of Anamu for viral infections, and no major health organizations endorse its use for this purpose. As such, while traditional use is notable, scientific validation remains limited and largely preliminary.

In summary, Anamu’s use for viral infection is primarily supported by traditional practices, with only limited and inconclusive scientific evidence to date.
