Agave has a history of traditional use in various cultures, particularly among indigenous peoples of Mexico and Central America, where it has been employed as a folk remedy for a range of ailments, including infections. The sap of some Agave species was applied topically to wounds, sores, and skin infections, and sometimes used internally for digestive and respiratory complaints thought to be caused by infections. The traditional rationale was often based on the observed antimicrobial properties of Agave sap and its soothing effects. However, while there are in vitro studies indicating that certain compounds in Agave, such as saponins and fructans, may exhibit antimicrobial or antiviral activity, robust clinical evidence supporting its effectiveness in treating or preventing viral infections in humans is lacking. Most of the available research is preliminary, conducted in laboratory settings, and has not translated into established medical practice. Therefore, while Agave's use for infections is supported by traditional practices, there is minimal scientific validation for its antiviral efficacy, and it is not widely recognized in evidence-based medicine for this purpose.
