Streptomyces is a genus of Gram-positive bacteria that is foundational in the history and ongoing development of antibacterial therapy. Scientific validation for its use in treating bacterial infections is overwhelming, as numerous antibiotics originally isolated from Streptomyces species are cornerstones of modern medicine. The most notable example is Streptomyces griseus, which produces streptomycin, the first effective treatment for tuberculosis and a broad-spectrum antibiotic. Other important antibiotics derived from Streptomyces include tetracyclines, chloramphenicol, and erythromycin (from Streptomyces erythreus). These compounds were discovered through systematic screening of soil actinomycetes and have since been extensively studied, characterized, and manufactured for clinical use. Their mechanisms of action have been elucidated, safety profiles established, and efficacy demonstrated in both laboratory and clinical settings. Accordingly, while the direct administration of live Streptomyces bacteria is not used clinically, the metabolites and antibiotics they produce are intensively used and scientifically validated for treating a wide range of bacterial infections. The importance of Streptomyces-derived antibiotics is reflected in their inclusion on the World Health Organization’s List of Essential Medicines and in the ongoing search for new antibiotics from Streptomyces species to address antimicrobial resistance.
