Shiitake mushrooms (Lentinula edodes) have a long history of use in traditional medicine, especially in East Asia, for supporting immune health and fighting infections. Scientifically, shiitake contains several bioactive compounds, notably lentinan (a β-glucan polysaccharide), which has demonstrated immunomodulatory and potential antimicrobial effects in vitro and in animal studies. Laboratory research suggests extracts of shiitake can inhibit the growth of certain bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, mainly through immune system activation rather than direct antibacterial action.

Some human studies have demonstrated that regular consumption of shiitake mushrooms can enhance markers of immune function, such as increased production of immunoglobulin A (IgA) and enhanced activity of natural killer (NK) cells. However, direct clinical evidence for shiitake’s efficacy in treating or preventing bacterial infections in humans is limited and mostly indirect. No large randomized controlled trials have demonstrated a clear clinical benefit for bacterial infections specifically.

In summary, there is a scientific basis for considering shiitake as supportive for immune function, which could theoretically help the body fight infections, including bacterial ones. However, the evidence for direct antibacterial effects in humans is weak, and shiitake should not be considered a substitute for established treatments.
