Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Self-Heal (Prunella vulgaris) has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in Europe and Asia, for the treatment of wounds, inflammation, and various infections, including those of bacterial origin. In traditional Chinese medicine, it is known as "xiakucao" and has been used to clear heat and resolve toxicity, which often refers to infections or inflammatory conditions. European herbalists have also applied Self-Heal topically to wounds and sores, presumably to prevent or treat infection.

The plant contains compounds such as rosmarinic acid, ursolic acid, and various flavonoids, which have demonstrated some antibacterial activity in laboratory (in vitro) studies. However, there is a significant gap between these laboratory findings and real-world clinical efficacy. No high-quality clinical trials in humans have established Self-Heal as an effective treatment for bacterial infections. Its use for this purpose persists primarily due to traditional knowledge and anecdotal reports rather than robust scientific validation.

In summary, while some laboratory studies suggest mild antibacterial properties, the predominant basis for using Self-Heal in support or treatment of bacterial infections remains traditional, with only modest supporting evidence. It should not be relied upon as a primary therapy for serious infections.
