Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4

Myoviridae is a family of bacteriophages (viruses that infect bacteria) that has been scientifically studied for its potential use in treating bacterial infections, particularly those resistant to antibiotics. Phage therapy, which employs bacteriophages such as those in the Myoviridae family, has a history dating back to the early 20th century, but interest has resurged due to the global rise of antibiotic resistance. Multiple laboratory and animal studies have demonstrated the ability of Myoviridae phages to target and lyse specific bacterial pathogens, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and Escherichia coli.

Human clinical evidence, while still limited compared to antibiotics, is accumulating. Several case reports and small clinical trials in recent years have documented successful treatment of otherwise untreatable bacterial infections using phages from the Myoviridae family. For instance, phage preparations containing Myoviridae have been used on a compassionate-use basis for patients with multidrug-resistant infections, sometimes resulting in infection resolution. Larger randomized controlled trials are underway to further assess safety and efficacy.

Current scientific consensus acknowledges the potential of Myoviridae-based phage therapy for bacterial infections, especially in contexts where antibiotics fail. However, more robust clinical data are needed before it becomes a mainstream therapy. Thus, the scientific support is strong but not yet definitive at the highest level of evidence.
