Monolaurin is a monoglyceride derived from lauric acid, which is found naturally in coconut oil and breast milk. Laboratory (in vitro) studies have demonstrated that monolaurin can disrupt the lipid membranes of various gram-positive bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus species, and Helicobacter pylori. The mechanism involves the integration of monolaurin into the bacterial cell membrane, leading to structural disintegration and cell death. These findings provide a plausible biochemical basis for its antibacterial activity.

However, while the preclinical evidence is promising, there is a lack of robust human clinical trials evaluating the effectiveness of monolaurin in treating or preventing bacterial infections. Most of the available data comes from laboratory or animal studies, and it is uncertain how these results translate to real-world use in humans.
