Leptospermum scoparium, commonly known as manuka, has a well-documented history of both traditional and scientific uses in treating bacterial infections. The most significant scientific evidence comes from research on manuka honey, which is derived from the nectar of L. scoparium flowers. Numerous in vitro studies have demonstrated that manuka honey possesses potent antibacterial activity against a wide range of bacterial pathogens, including Staphylococcus aureus (including MRSA) and Streptococcus pyogenes. The antibacterial properties are primarily attributed to the presence of methylglyoxal (MGO), a compound found in higher concentrations in manuka honey compared to other honeys. Clinical studies have investigated the use of manuka honey for wound care, diabetic ulcers, and burns, showing that it can help reduce bacterial load and promote healing, although evidence is stronger for topical rather than systemic infection treatment. Regulatory agencies in several countries recognize the use of medical-grade manuka honey dressings for wound management. While the majority of evidence relates to the honey rather than other extracts of L. scoparium, and in vitro studies cannot always be generalized to clinical settings, the scientific foundation for antibacterial use, especially in wound care, is substantial. However, more high-quality clinical trials are needed to further validate and optimize its therapeutic application.
