Goldenrod (Solidago spp.), particularly in mixed herbal preparations, has a long history of traditional use for various ailments, including as a remedy for infections. Folk medicine, especially in Europe and North America, has employed goldenrod primarily for urinary tract health, where it was sometimes thought to help with mild urinary tract infections (UTIs) due to its purported diuretic and anti-inflammatory effects. The rationale was that increasing urine flow might help flush out pathogens. However, direct antibacterial effects are only weakly established, and most modern scientific reviews note limited in vitro evidence for antimicrobial properties. No substantial clinical trials support its use against bacterial infections in humans. Most authoritative sources, including the European Medicines Agency and major pharmacopoeias, only recognize goldenrod for symptomatic relief of lower urinary tract discomfort and not as a treatment for bacterial infections. Therefore, while goldenrod’s use for infections is rooted in tradition, scientific validation is minimal, and it should not be considered an evidence-based treatment for bacterial infections.
