Fucoidan, a sulfated polysaccharide primarily derived from brown seaweed, has been studied for its potential antimicrobial and immunomodulatory properties. In vitro studies have demonstrated that fucoidan can inhibit the growth of certain bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, possibly by disrupting bacterial adhesion or biofilm formation. Additionally, fucoidan has shown some ability to enhance the activity of immune cells such as macrophages and natural killer cells, which could indirectly support the body’s defense against bacterial infections.

However, most of the evidence comes from laboratory and animal studies, with few well-controlled human clinical trials specifically examining fucoidan’s efficacy in the prevention or treatment of bacterial infections. While these preliminary results are promising, there is currently insufficient high-quality human evidence to strongly recommend fucoidan for this purpose. The rating of 2 reflects some scientific interest and early-stage research, but a clear therapeutic benefit in humans has not been established. Further clinical trials are needed to determine whether these effects translate into meaningful outcomes for infection prevention or treatment in humans.
