Evidence supporting the use of: Commiphora (unspecified)
For the health condition: Infection (bacterial)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Commiphora species, particularly Commiphora myrrha (myrrh), have a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, notably in Ayurvedic, Unani, and traditional Chinese medicine, for treating various infections and wounds. The gum-resin obtained from Commiphora species has been applied topically and sometimes ingested for its purported antiseptic and antimicrobial properties. In ancient texts, myrrh is frequently cited as a remedy for infected wounds, mouth ulcers, and other bacterial afflictions. Some in vitro studies have demonstrated that extracts from Commiphora species exhibit antibacterial activity against certain Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. However, the evidence is mainly preclinical and limited to laboratory settings; there are few, if any, rigorous human clinical trials confirming efficacy for treating bacterial infections. The mechanism is thought to involve volatile oils and sesquiterpenes found in the resin, which may disrupt bacterial cell membranes. Overall, the traditional use of Commiphora for bacterial infections is well documented, and there is some preliminary scientific rationale based on laboratory studies. However, high-quality clinical data are lacking, and its effectiveness in actual clinical infection management has not been firmly established.
