Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Brine, which is a solution of salt (sodium chloride) in water, has a long history of traditional use for treating and preventing bacterial infections, particularly in the context of wound care and oral health. Historically, salt water has been used in various cultures as a cleansing agent for wounds, and as a gargle for sore throats and oral infections. The rationale behind this practice is that high concentrations of salt can create a hypertonic environment, which draws water out of bacterial cells via osmosis, thereby inhibiting their growth. Additionally, salt water can help physically cleanse wounds or mucous membranes by flushing away debris and microbes.

However, while there is some laboratory evidence that hypertonic saline can reduce bacterial load, the effect is generally mild and not equivalent to that of modern antibiotics or antiseptics. Clinical studies supporting the efficacy of brine or salt water for treating bacterial infections in humans are limited and mostly anecdotal. Evidence is somewhat stronger for minor oral infections or for promoting oral hygiene, such as using saline rinses after dental procedures to reduce microbial load and inflammation. Overall, the primary justification for brine use is traditional, with modest supportive evidence, but it is not considered a first-line or definitive treatment for bacterial infections in contemporary medicine.
