Evidence supporting the use of: Bifidobacterium bifidum
For the health condition: Infection (bacterial)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Bifidobacterium bifidum is a probiotic bacterium commonly found in the human gut and is included in many probiotic supplements. Its use for supporting or treating bacterial infections is primarily grounded in emerging scientific evidence rather than longstanding traditional use. Research suggests that B. bifidum may help prevent or mitigate certain bacterial infections by modulating the host's immune response, enhancing the integrity of the gut barrier, and competitively inhibiting pathogenic bacteria.
Several studies, including in vitro and animal models, have demonstrated that B. bifidum can inhibit the adhesion and growth of harmful bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Clostridioides difficile. Some small clinical trials in humans have shown that B. bifidum-containing probiotics may reduce the incidence or severity of infections like antibiotic-associated diarrhea and respiratory tract infections, especially in children and the elderly. The proposed mechanisms include production of antimicrobial substances, stimulation of mucosal immunity, and restoration of healthy microbiota balance following antibiotic use.
However, the overall quality and quantity of clinical evidence is limited, with many studies being small or using mixed probiotic formulations, making it difficult to attribute effects specifically to B. bifidum. Therefore, while there is a scientific rationale and some supportive data, robust clinical validation is lacking, and the current evidence would be rated as moderate to low (2/5). Further well-designed clinical trials are needed to establish clear efficacy for the treatment or prevention of bacterial infections.
