Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Babchi (Psoralea corylifolia) has a long history of use in traditional Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine for a variety of skin conditions and infections. Historically, Babchi seeds and their extracts have been applied topically or ingested to treat bacterial infections, particularly of the skin, such as leprosy, vitiligo, and other dermatological issues believed to have infectious components. The rationale for its use in traditional systems is based on the observation of its antimicrobial properties in crude preparations, as well as its ability to promote skin healing.

Modern scientific studies have identified that Babchi contains several bioactive compounds, such as psoralen, bakuchiol, and isopsoralen, which exhibit antimicrobial activity in vitro. Some laboratory studies have demonstrated that these compounds can inhibit the growth of certain bacterial strains, including Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. However, the clinical evidence supporting Babchi’s effectiveness in treating or preventing bacterial infections in humans is minimal and largely anecdotal. There is a lack of well-designed human trials confirming its efficacy and safety for this specific purpose. Therefore, while the traditional use is supported by preliminary scientific findings, robust clinical validation is still lacking, and the evidence is rated as moderate (2/5).
