Vitamin A has scientific validation for its use in supporting or treating certain infections, particularly in children. The strongest evidence comes from studies on measles and other childhood infections, especially in populations where vitamin A deficiency is prevalent. Vitamin A plays a critical role in maintaining the integrity and function of epithelial tissues and the immune system. Deficiency impairs mucosal barriers and diminishes immune responses, increasing susceptibility to infections and severity of disease. Supplementation with vitamin A has been shown to reduce morbidity and mortality from measles, as well as decrease complications such as pneumonia and diarrhea. The World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF recommend high-dose vitamin A supplementation for children with measles in areas where deficiency is common. There is also evidence that vitamin A supplementation can reduce the severity of other infections, such as diarrheal disease, in deficient populations. However, the evidence is weaker for the general use of vitamin A to treat infections in populations without deficiency, and supplementation in excess can be toxic. Overall, the use of vitamin A in infection is scientifically validated, primarily in the context of deficiency and in specific infectious diseases like measles, rather than as a general antimicrobial or immune booster.
